Wonder Woman star determined to spread indigenous culture in his films

Wonder Woman star Eugene Brave Rock is determined to make a stand for all indigenous North Americans in his films by urging directors to perfect the language and culture of his tribe correctly.

The former stuntman, who played The Chief opposite Gal Gadot and Chris Pine in the summer blockbuster, tells WENN he's always calling on Blackfoot tribal elders for character advice in a bid to make sure he nails his performances.

"I've talked to them about issues of language or if I'm in the middle of a project, maybe some authenticity on how I dress," he explains. "A lot of times we don't have the power to change those options, but it's nice to educate people as well and say, 'You know what, this is how we actually dressed and this is how we did our hair'."

Eugene reveals he has turned down roles that he felt weren't sensitive enough to Native American and First Nations people, but admits he had to take on parts at the start of his career that weren't as respectful to North America's first settlers as he would have liked: "In the beginning, I didn't have that option as I was trying to get my foot in the door," he says.

But now he's a Blackfoot community hero in his native Canada, thanks mainly to his portrayal of The Chief in Wonder Woman and an appearance in The Revenant, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

"I recently went home to Alberta (Canada) after the premiere of Wonder Woman and I received a real hero's welcome," he beams. "I want to inspire our youth... and going home I got nothing but gratitude from everybody for sharing our culture with the world."
